early childhood green schools
Children, especially in their earliest years of life, are inherently active and inquisitive. Everything is worth exploring with all of their senses. Learning is everything; experience is everything. Their minds and bodies are growing at a phenomenal pace, developing neural connections they will use for the rest of their lives. It’s no surprise, then, given the nature of the young learner, that an increasing body of research supports the positive cognitive, social, and emotional benefits of environmental education in early childhood, including attention restoration, reduced stress, increased physical activity, improved self-discipline, increases in academic performance, increases in development of communication and leadership skills, and more.
Offered online, the Early Childhood Green Schools eeCredential is being built with a focus on best practices for environmental education in early childhood and engaging young children in exploring and learning in the world around them.
Learning outcomes for early childhood educators participating in the eeCredential include the ability to recognize and apply best practices in environmental education for early childhood (from NAAEE's Guidelines for Excellence in EE for Early Childhood) in engaging young children in making their early childhood facility greener and healthier; confidence and exhibition of using high quality EE and Early Childhood Green Schools materials to engage young learners in age/developmentally appropriate learning; confidence and exhibition of engaging the learning center community, including other staff and classrooms, caregivers, and community members in engaging young learners in creating a greener and healthier early childhood center.
