Job Description

Job Overview and Requirements: KAEE is seeking an enthusiastic individual with a passion for our mission to work with the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works (EQPW) on their K-12 environmental education program.


The Cycling and Transportation Educator will work closely with the Environmental Education Coordinator to continuously develop and implement a robust, engaging K-12 outreach program in Lexington-Fayette County. Safe Cycling and alternative transportation are the focal topics for the program. The educator will be involved in direct outreach to students, primarily elementary school students, and will be the lead facilitator for many program-related field trips. The selected applicant will have professional development opportunities, along with the ability to network with professionals throughout the service area and state of Kentucky.

Summary of Essential Job Functions:

  • Youth Bicycle Education: serve as the primary educator for school-based time bicycle education programs; assist Out of School Coordinator with after school bike lessons, as needed

  • Bicycle Library Maintenance: make basic on-site repairs to bicycles during classroom education; maintain and repair bicycle library; keep bicycle repair area organized and clean

  • Camps: lead camps related to bicycle safety; assist with camp lessons and activities on other topics (e.g., water quality, waste management) during summer, fall and spring breaks

  • Community Outreach: lead trail rides for youth and adults as part of broader programming efforts; provide cycling safety lessons in conjunction with other cycling focused programs and events; coordinate with other staff to get bike trailer and lessons to schools (position serves all MPO areas, not just Fayette Co.)

  • Teacher Training: assist Environmental Education Coordinator in facilitating workshops for teachers focused on cycling and alternative transportation

  • School-based Environmental Education: occasionally substitute teach for core environmental educators to lead lessons as a part of the units of study in both classroom and after school settings

  • Program and Event Planning: assist Community Pod in planning and executing transportation- focused events for the public such as StreetFest and Glow Ride and programs such as Cycle September

  • Tracking: use existing formats to track engagements when serving as the primary contact for that event/program; regularly maintain timesheet and mileage documents

  • Some evening and weekend work is required

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (Planning, Environmental Education, Education, etc.), OR 5 years of transportation outreach/education experience OR 3 years of transportation outreach/ education experience and certification as a League Cycling Instructor and Demonstrated Bicycle Mechanic skills (if claimed, in-person assessment will be required)

AND

  • Minimum 3 full-time years of formal or non-formal teaching, planning, bike maintenance, outreach and/or other related experience; must be identifiable in supplied resume

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (Planning, Environmental Education, Education, etc.) AND 5 years of full-time experience, OR Masters Degree in related field (see above) plus three years of transportation outreach/education experience OR PhD OR Ten years of transportation outreach/ education experience and certification as a League Cycling Instructor and Demonstrated Bicycle Mechanic skills (if claimed, assessment will be required)

PLUS

  • Minimum 5 full-time years of formal or non-formal teaching, planning, bike maintenance, outreach and/or other related experience(in addition to any years used to meet the criteria above); must be identifiable in supplied resume


Also,

  • High level of comfort riding a bicycle within an urban setting

  • A valid driver’s license, with a clean driving record (no major violations)

  • Reliable access to a vehicle (educators are responsible for getting to/from program sites; mileage is reimbursed according to the KY state mileage rate)

  • Willingness to learn how or ability to drive large vehicles (cargo van and pickup truck)

  • Willingness to learn how or ability to safely tow a cargo trailer

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently

  • Ability to work and effectively communicate with a wide range of people including staff (administrative and operational), teachers, community partners, students, volunteers and elected officials

  • Ability to manage your schedule and work independently

  • Ability to collaborate and work with a team

  • Dedication to building opportunity and access to safe transportation and education

  • Dedication to teaching and engagement strategies that are responsive to community needs

  • Ability to work outdoors and complete physically demanding tasks

  • Comfortable with standard software and programs such as Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Slack, Canva, etc.

  • Ability to work some evenings, weekends and holidays to meet work objectives

  • Willingness to undergo a background check


Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding of stormwater, sustainability, waste management and/or transportation issues

  • Experience teaching K-5 grades in a formal setting

  • Teaching credentials, either formal or non-formal (e.g., certified Environmental Educator)

  • Completion of Smart Cycling course through the League of American Cyclists

  • Certification as a League Cycling Instructor

  • Experience with culturally responsive pedagogy and trauma-informed teaching

  • Demonstrated commitment to enacting best practices in youth education and development

  • Bilingual

Compensation

Pay: $46,230.08, adjustments made for experience and skill beyond the minimum

  • Equivalent to an LFUCG 516 grade

  • Pay would be adjusted for work schedules between 32 and 40 hours per week

  • Maximum potential starting pay is $57,788.64 (mid-range)


Compensation and Benefits: Full-time, exempt position working 40 hours per week (a 32 hour option is available with reduced salary and time off benefits). We believe in work-life balance and a flexible, family-friendly schedule and therefore offer compensatory time up to 120 hours for additional hours worked, 10 days of vacation time, 12 days of sick leave, and 6 paid regular holidays and 3 paid floating holidays per year.


KAEE observes a paid office shut down between December 24th through January 1st. Additional benefits include healthcare and a SIMPLE IRA retirement plan with a 3% match. This position will be based at the Environmental Quality and Public Works office in Lexington. Reimbursement will be given for costs incurred during work- related travel. Benefits will immediately begin accruing, but this position is subject to a 90-day probationary period
