Job Overview and Requirements: KAEE is seeking an enthusiastic individual with a passion for our mission to work with the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works (EQPW) on their K-12 environmental education program.
The OST Coordinator will work closely with the Environmental Education Coordinator to continuously develop and implement a robust, engaging K-12 outreach program in Lexington-Fayette County. Waste management, water quality (stormwater and sanitary sewers), sustainability and transportation are the focal topics for the program. The educator will be involved in direct outreach to community partners and will be the lead facilitator for many program-related field trips. The selected applicant will have professional development opportunities, along with the ability to network with professionals throughout the service area and state of Kentucky.

Summary of Essential Job Functions:
OST: work with the Environmental Education Manager to develop a comprehensive Out of School Time curriculum, creating new or adapting existing learning experiences to OST needs; lead OST programs, with emphasis on existing afterschool and summer programs
Camps: assist in developing a weeklong, career-oriented summer program for middle school students to expose them to EQPW career opportunities; with the Transportation Educator, lead camps related to bicycle safety
Fostering Community Partnerships: further EQPW goals and objectives through strategic relationships with community and city partners while also supporting their missions and the people they serve
Bicycle Education: serve as the primary educator for afterschool bicycle education programs; assist Transportation Educator to manage and maintain the bicycle library
Bicycle Maintenance: make basic on-site repairs to bicycles during OST programming (e.g., fix a flat; change derailleur hangers; reattach chains; adjust seat height and brakes)
School-based Environmental Education: occasionally substitute teach for core environmental educators to lead lessons as a part of the units of study in both classroom and after school settings
Field Trips: assist in facilitating field trips to sites such as the Recycle Center, Haley Pike Waste Management Facility (capped landfill and compost pad), Town Branch Wastewater Treatment Plant, West Hickman Wastewater Treatment Plant, local city parks, watershed sampling sites and other appropriate sites as they are identified; manage field trip schedule–classes and guides
Educator Training: assist Environmental Education Manager with facilitating workshops for community educators, as needed
Community Outreach: assist Transportation Educator with trail rides for families as part of broader programming efforts; provide cycling safety lessons in conjunction with transportation-focused events; coordinate with other staff to get bike trailer and lessons to schools and other program sites
Tracking: use existing formats to track engagements with students when serving as the primary contact for that program; regularly maintain timesheet and mileage documents
Schedule will regularly include evening and weekend work; schedule will vary week to week and season to season with a fair amount of personal control of schedule
Requirements
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in related field (Environmental Education, Education, Childhood Development, Social Work etc.), OR 5 years of formal or non-formal education experience OR 3 years of formal or non-formal education experience and an environmental education certification
PLUS a minimum of 3 full-time years of formal or non-formal teaching experience; must be identifiable in supplied resume
Also,
Comfort riding a bicycle within an urban setting
A valid driver’s license, with a clean driving record (no major violations)
Reliable access to a vehicle (educators are responsible for getting to/from program sites; mileage is reimbursed according to the KY state mileage rate)
Willingness to learn or ability to drive large vehicles (cargo van and pickup truck)
Willingness to learn or ability to safely tow a cargo trailer
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
Ability to work and effectively communicate with a wide range of people including staff (administrative and operational), teachers, community partners, students, volunteers and elected officials
Ability to manage your schedule and work independently
Ability to collaborate and work with a team

Dedication to teaching and engagement strategies that are responsive to community needs
Ability to work outdoors and complete physically demanding tasks

Ability to pass a state and federal criminal background check
Ability to pass a Criminal Abuse and Neglect (CAN) registry check from the Kentucky Cabinet for Health & Family Services
Desired Qualifications
Demonstrated understanding of stormwater, waste management, sustainability and/or transportation issues
Experience teaching in an afterschool setting
Teaching credentials, either formal or non-formal (e.g., certified Environmental Educator)
Basic understanding of bicycle repairs
Experience with culturally responsive pedagogy and trauma-informed teaching
Demonstrated commitment to cultivating diversity and equity in environmental education and to enacting best practices in youth education and development
Bilingual
Compensation
Pay: $22.23/hour with adjustments made for experience and skill beyond the minimum
Equivalent to an LFUCG 516 grade
Maximum potential starting pay is $27.78/hour (mid-range)
Benefits:
Part-time exempt position working 32 hours per week with an option to increase to 40 hours with demonstrated need. We believe in work-life balance and a flexible, family-friendly schedule and therefore offer compensatory time up to 120 hours for additional hours worked, 96 hours of vacation time, 76.8 hours of sick leave, and 6 paid regular holidays and 3 paid floating holidays per year (paid out at 6.4 hours each holiday). KAEE observes a paid office shut down between December 24th through January 1st with this position receiving 6.4 paid hours per weekday. Additional benefits include healthcare and a SIMPLE IRA retirement plan with a 3% match. This position will be based at city offices in Lexington. Reimbursement will be given for costs incurred during work-related travel. Benefits will immediately begin accruing, but this position is subject to a 90-day probationary period.
