Environmental Education & Your Community

This course is designed to help you anchor environmental aims within the context of community interests, issues, and capacities. The course is the first of two that focuses on Key Characteristic 1 of the NAAEE Guidelines for Excellence: Community Engagement.

Connect EE Interests and Capacities with Community Concerns, Assets, and Aspirations

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify a community that they are interested in interacting with and begin to investigate this community using appropriate investigation tools.

  • List and explain the different aspects of community well-being, including related environmental issues that could potentially benefit from EE.

  • Identify partners and allies within the community that are already addressing or have the potential to address related environmental and sustainability issues.

  • Investigate community priorities that relate to their organization’s priorities that can be effectively addressed through EE.

  • Work with appropriate community organizations in order to involve a broader community through a variety of outreach methods.
